The traditional restaurant since 1583 – Heritage with a modern twist
Flensburg’s landmark!
The Gnomenkeller was built in 1583 by a Dutch architect, probably as a wine cellar. The cellar vault is one of the remains of the solid architecture of the 16th century. Magnificent gothic vaults supported by two free-standing pillars and numerous wall brackets cover the space and give it a rich architectural variety through transverse, longitudinal and diagonal straps with the intermediate vaulted surfaces (caps).
In the 17th century, the Gnomenkeller was used as a storeroom for merchants. In 1873, when a wine store and bar arose, the cellar got the name “Gnomenkeller” because friendly gnomes on the stairway invited passers to stop by.
The drawing teacher Schurig, a regular guest, was commissioned to decorate the cellar. He also decorated the tables and chairs with so-called pyrography, wood paintings made with glowing iron bars.
The murals were very funny. There was “Lippe Dickmund” (Lip fatmouth), “Urban Brummkreisel”, “Krischan Dösig” (Krischan drowsy), “Baron von Schaf” (Baron of sheep) and many other gnomes with bizarre names. In 1876 a breakthrough to the neighboring house was created, a new room was built: “Tor Smede”. Golden words on the entrance at the Holm led the guests down the path into the basement. In 1906, a new council chamber was decorated with the arms of Schleswig-Holstein cities. This is how our present-day little lounge (Stübchen) was born.
